The Bruce Sherman Fellowship in Urologic Oncology is a fully funded 12-month clinical fellowship with an option for a second year of laboratory research.
During the clinical training year, the trainee will have outpatient patient care responsibilities at both NYU Urology Associates (the clinical practice of the full-time NYU Department of Urology faculty) and the NYU Cancer Institute. Clinical responsibilities will include outpatient management of patients, assisting with office-based surgical procedures, participation in multidisciplinary oncology clinics and monitoring of patients in active clinical trials. Surgical responsibilities will be at Tisch Hospital, Bellevue Hospital Center and the Manhattan Veterans Affairs Medical Center under the direct supervision of the Urologic Oncology Program faculty of the Department of Urology. At the Manhattan VA, the fellow will have attending privileges and cover the operating room one day per week.
Clinical training encompasses open and laparoscopic surgical techniques, advanced urologic oncologic clinical and surgical management, medical and radiation oncology exposure and clinical and translational research methodology.
Upon the completion of the clinical training year, trainees will be given the option of applying for extramural funding to support 1–2 years of research training in the research laboratories of the Department of Urology. If the trainee chooses to pursue such training, he or she will active as a postdoctoral fellow under the direct supervision of the chosen laboratory primary investigator. Trainees have no clinical responsibilities during this research training period.
