Clinical Experience

Fellows in this program develop expertise in FPM/RS through experience and training at Tisch Hospital (the main teaching hospital for NYU Langone Medical Center), Bellevue Hospital (a New York City public hospital) and the outpatient facilities of the Department of Urology at NYU School of Medicine (NYU Urology Associates). Fellows thus have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in diagnosing and treating a wide variety of conditions in a broad cross-section of the population. With supervision by attending physicians, fellows are exposed to all major areas of the specialty, including pelvic organ prolapse, urinary incontinence, fecal incontinence, urinary fistulae, voiding dysfunction and lower urinary tract symptoms, inflammatory diseases of the lower urinary tract, and neurogenic voiding dysfunction. Fellows also personally perform approximately 500 urodynamic and video-urodynamic studies per year, allowing them to become expert in performing, interpreting and troubleshooting urodynamics.

The Department’s outpatient facility, NYU Urology Associates, is located three blocks from Tisch Hospital in the offices of the Department of Urology, and is equipped with state-of-the-art video urodynamics, endoscopy, cystoscopy and radiographic imaging equipment. Minimally invasive procedures such as urethral bulking agent injections are performed at this facility. In the outpatient facilities at NYU Urology Associates, fellows have one-on-one contact with faculty.

The fellowship program is designed to provide fellows with progressive responsibility in patient management, diagnostic testing and surgery as they demonstrate increasing competency. The ultimate goal is to develop independent, responsible clinicians with sound clinical judgment and the ability to carry out appropriate management plans and surgery.
