Female Pelvic Medicine & Reconstructive Surgery Fellowship
Program description
The New York University Department of Urology Fellowship in Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery (FPM/RS), directed by Victor W. Nitti, M.D., is a two-year program approved by the combined committee of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology and the American Board of Urology (ABOG/ABU). The fellowship focuses on clinical training and clinical and translational research and prepares its graduates for a career in clinical practice as well as academic medicine.
Two positions are offered for qualified candidates who have completed an accredited Urology or OB/GYN residency in the United States or Canada and who will be board eligible (ABOG or ABU) in Urology or OB/GYN at the completion of their residency.
The fellowship was started in 1999 as a one-year training program in female urology and voiding dysfunction under the direction of Dr. Victor Nitti. In 2006, it was expanded to a two-year fellowship, when ABOG/ABU approval was granted. To date, eight fellows have graduated. Beginning in 2009 (for fellows beginning in 2010), the application process for the fellowship will involve a match, similar to the application process for residency. The match will be run by the Society for Urodynamics and Female Urology (SUFU) and the American Urological Association.
Goals of the fellowship
- To train fellows in the diagnosis and medical and surgical treatment of all major areas of FPM/RS, preparing them for clinical practice.
- To prepare fellows for a career in academic FPM/RS.
- To advance the specialty of FPM/RS through clinical and laboratory research.
