The NYU Department of Urology will again offer its annual postgraduate course on Advances in Adult and Pediatric Urology on December 10-12, 2009.
The course is designed specifically for the practicing community and academic urologist seeking a state-of-the-art update on important clinical topics in urology. Nurses, primary care physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants and residents will also benefit from the course information.
The course covers a variety of topics in urology, including ultrasound, nephrolithiasis and endourology, female urology, bladder cancer and prostate cancer.

Course description
The diagnosis and management of many urologic diseases have been greatly influenced by recent pharmacological, surgical and technological advances. One of the greatest challenges of the practicing urologist is to stay abreast with the many dynamic changes in this field. An internationally acclaimed faculty has been assembled to provide this update. During the plenary sessions, the registrants will have the opportunity to participate in question and answer sessions. In addition, an emphasis on case presentations with faculty participation will enhance the practical value of the course.
Educational objectives
- Evaluate the surgical treatment options for commonly treated female urological conditions such as pelvic floor prolapse and stress urinary incontinence
- Review the latest robotic surgical techniques for radical prostatectomy, partial nephrectomy, upper urinary tract reconstruction, and radical cystectomy
- Summarize the AUA guidelines for management and screening of primary vesicoureteral reflux in children and strategies to incorporate them into practice
- Establish the optimal radiologic techniques for imaging the renal mass to improve diagnosis in practice
- Incorporate the latest clinical guidelines in order for the infertile patient to receive the most up-to-date work-up including physical examination, semen analysis and hormonal evaluation
- Identify causes of obstructive azoospermia, such as ejaculatory duct obstruction and congenital bilateral absence of the vas deferens
- Define hypogonadism and incorporate a screening strategy to diagnosis it in patients who would otherwise go undiagnosed
- Effectively incorporate strategies for identifying BPH in patients, as well as selecting treatment
